Memory Verse
“I praise you,
for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very very well.”
Psalm 139:14
Day 1-I Am Wonderfully Made
Key Verse-Psalm 139:14
- Pray.
- Look up the memory verse (Psalm 139:14) together.
- Read the verse aloud a couple times.
- Questions to think about:
- What does this verse say about you?
- What does this verse say about God?
- Older kids-read all of Psalm 139 together and discuss or have them journal:
- What stands out to you in this chapter?
- What does this chapter say about you?
- What does it say about God?
- What does God want me to understand?
- Younger Kids-read Genesis 1:26-31 and discuss:
- Who made you?
- In whose image/likeness are you made? Talk about how God made your kids to have attributes like Him:
- We were made to have relationships and friendships with others.
- God made us to be able to communicate.
- We can think and decide things and feel things.
- What two kinds of people did God create? (verse 27-Explain the terms male and female.)
- What did God say about His creation that day? (verse 31)
- Remind them that each child is His creation too and He sees His work as being very good.
- Pray. Thank God for each of your kids and thank Him for specific attributes of each of your children that you really love.
Day 2-I Am Equipped
Key Verse-Jeremiah 1:5
- Pray
- Review the memory verse aloud. Then have your kids write it down or trace it.
- Ask, “Have you ever been talking and trying to tell someone something, but they keep misunderstanding you or saying, ‘What?’ How did you feel when this happened?”
- Ask, “Have you ever been given an assignment or a job to do that you really didn’t think you would be able to do? Maybe you didn’t understand it or maybe it would take a really long time, or maybe it was going to be something that made you very nervous. Tell me about it.”
- Today we are going to read about Jeremiah. Explain that when Jeremiah was fairly young and inexperienced, God gave him a big job to do, and he didn’t think he was up for the task.
- Read Jeremiah 1:5 (God’s words to Jeremiah).
- Ask, “What does God tell Jeremiah? How long had he known Jeremiah? When did God actually decide that Jeremiah would have the job as a prophet (before he was born)?”
- Read Jeremiah 1:6 (Jeremiah’s response). Discuss how Jeremiah felt and why he felt this way.
- Read Jeremiah 1:7-10.
- Ask, “What are some things God says to Jeremiah when he is afraid, and he doesn’t feel that he is ready for the job?”
- Explain that God feels the same about us. The words He gave to Jeremiah are the words He wants you to hear too.
- God knew exactly what you would be like even before He made you.
- He formed you.
- He knows you.
- He already knows what your future holds.
- He will guide you where to go.
- He will help you know what to say.
- He is with you to deliver (rescue) you.
- Find some one-on-one time if possible today to ask, “Is there anything you are worried about or don’t feel like you are ready for?” Remind them about Jeremiah and that God knows your child too. Just like God touched Jeremiah’s lips and gave him the words he needed to say, God will give him/her just what they need as well.
- Activity
- Younger kids-play with play dough. As they are playing, remind them that God formed them, He knows them, He will give them what they need to be ready for what He has planned for them.
Day 3-I Am Not Alone
Key Verse-Joshua 1:9
- Pray.
- Review the memory verse (Psalm 139:14).
- Give some background information about Joshua or ask your kids what they already know about him.
- He was the leader of Israelites after Moses died.
- He was one of two spies who was sent to spy out the land of Canaan and returned with a report that they could overcome it (Numbers 13).
- Because if his faith in God, He stayed alive while all but one of the other spies died of a plague (Numbers 14:36-38).
- Read Joshua 1:1-9.
- Joshua was given the task to lead the Israelites to the Promised Land and take it over.
- Ask, “What command did God give Joshua three times in the few verses we just read? (“Be strong and courageous” verses 6, 7, 9)
- Ask, “The job assigned to Joshua was not an easy one. How was he able to be strong and courageous when faced with such a challenging job?”
- The Lord promised that He would be with him. He promised that He would not fail or forsake Joshua (verse 5). This is how Joshua was able to be strong and courageous-because he knew that God would not ever leave him alone. He knew that God had always been with Moses and that He would always be with Joshua.
- Help your kids understand that God is always with each of your children too. He will never leave them or abandon them (Deuteronomy 31:6). And because God is always with them, they can be strong and courageous in whatever new things come their way.
- Have one of your children pray, asking God to help them be strong and courageous. Thank Him for not leaving you alone.
- For more of the story, read Joshua 6.
Day 4-I Am HIS
Key Verse-Psalm 100:3
- Pray.
- Practice the memory verse (Psalm 139:14).
- Read Psalm 100:3.
- Ask, “What are three things that God wants you to remember from this verse?”
- The Lord is God.
- He made us.
- We are His people, AKA the sheep of His pasture.
- Have your kids tell you everything they know about sheep. Watch a youtube video if you have time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vK3KsFd2YnQ Then discuss why God compares us to sheep.
- Read Psalm 23. You could have them close their eyes so they can picture in their head what is being read.
- Ask, “What do we learn about our Shepherd? What does the Shepherd want you to do?”
- Activity
- Pick one of the verses and draw a picture of it.
- Sheep coloring page (younger) http://www.supercoloring.com/coloring-pages/mammals/sheep
- Go to Pinterest and type in “sheep activities for kids”. There are lots of fun ideas.
Day 5-I am Loved by the Father
Key Verse-1 John 3:1
- Pray.
- Review the memory verse.
- Tell your children how much you love them today. Tell them why you love them. Help them know that even though you love them so much, God, their heavenly Father, loves them with an even great love.
- Read John 3:16-17.
- Ask, “What did God do to prove to us how much He loves us?”
- Ask, “Do you ever disobey us (your parents)? Do you ever do things that you know you shouldn’t; do you ever sin? Do we (parents) ever stop loving you even though you do bad things sometimes?”
- Explain that God is our Heavenly Father. He sees us as HIS children. He never stops loving us, no matter how much we have sinned. Sin separates us from God, but He loved us so much that He wanted to make a way for us to be able to get back to Him. So He gave Jesus to us. Jesus took our place by dying the death we deserve because of our sin (Romans 6:23), and He rose from the dead so that we would not be separated from God, but live with Him forever.
- Read John 1:12.
- Ask, “What does God call those who put their trust in Jesus (those who believe that Jesus died to save them from a life separated from God and surrender their lives to Him)?”
- Read 1 John 3:1.
- Ask, “How does God feel about His children? Do you ever disobey God; do you ever sin? Does God ever stop loving you even though you do bad things sometimes?”
- God is like the best, most perfect parent ever! He loves you so much, even when you mess up. He knows just what you need. He knows the best advice to give. He comforts you when you are sad or hurt. He is always with you.
- Pray. Thank God for loving you so much and for wanting you as His child.
