Day 1-Fathful in Friendship
- Pray.
- Review the memory verse.
- Discuss what faithfulness means with your children. It is a committment to being trustworthy, dependable, and loyal. When we have asked Jesus to forgive us of our sins and when we make Him our Lord (our Boss), we want to remain faithful to Him. We want to be dedicated to Him and do what pleases Him more than we want to please other people.
- Read 1 Samuel 18:1-12.
- When David and Jonathan met, they became friends. Jonathan even gave David his royal robe (He was King Saul’s son-the prince) to show that He knew that God had a big plan for David (to be king) and that he would be faithful to David and to God.
- Ask (older kids), “Why do you think ‘the Lord was with David but had departed from Saul’ (verse 12)?”
- Read 1 Samuel 19:1-7.
- Ask, “What was Saul wanting to do? Why was he wanting to kill David?”
- Saul was jealous of the attention David was getting, so he tried to kill him. Jonathan could have chosen to be jealous of David too. After all, he was the prince and typically would have been the next king. But, Jonathan chose to be a faithful friend instead. He was faithful to God because he trusted that God’s plans were better than his own.
- Ask, “How did Jonathan show that he was a faithful, friend?”
- Instead of getting caught up in anger, Jonathan spoke calmly to his dad and reminded him of the truth. He was faithful to do what was right and to do what pleased God. He was a faithful friend to David because he was dependable and trustworthy-he did what he said he would do.
- There are more examples of Jonathan and David’s faithful friendship to one another. Older kids can continue reading 1 Samuel 20 and 2 Samuel 9.
- Ask, “Who are some of your best friends? How can you be faithful friends to them?”
Day 2- God is Faithful
- Pray.
- Review the memory verse. Have each child say it by him/herself.
- Review what faithfulness is.
- For older kids, jumble up all the letters in the word FAITHFULNESS and have them unscramble them. They can look up some synonyms for ‘faithful’.
- For younger kids, you can have some synonyms written out on a few pieces of paper, one word per page, Have them turnover the paper to see the word. Ask, “What do you think that says; what letters do you see?”
- Jesus is always faithful. He is always steadfast, He is always dependable, He is always trustworthy. He gives us an example to follow in the Bible of how we can remain faithful even when we are tempted to do things that we shouldn’t.
- Read Matthew 4:1-11.
- Ask, “How did Jesus show His faithfulness in these verses? Each time Satan tempted Him, what did Jesus do to remain faithful (quoted Scripture-verses 4, 7, 10)? Reread verse 1. Who was Jesus following (The Spirit)?”
- When we are tempted to sin, it can be pretty hard to resist it. But we can be faithful to God if we do what Jesus did:
- Spirit-He let the Holy Spirit lead Him (Galatians 5:16).
- Scripture-He knew that the truth in the Scripture would help to keep him from sin (Psalm 119:11).
- Submit-He chose to Submit to God (do what God wanted Him to do) and say no to the temptation (James 4:7).
- Read and discuss 1 Corinthians 10:13.
- God is always faithful. He is always trustworthy. He is always dependable. He stays the same. You can count on Him.
