Memory Verse
“For a child will born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 (CSB)
Day 1-Judge
- Pray.
- Practice the memory verse.
- Another name that Jesus is known by is Judge. What do you know about judges? What do they do? Why do we need them? If your kids are unfamiliar with a courtroom, show them a picture of one.
- Explain that a judge is a leader. A judge listens to witnesses (people who heard/saw things) tell their story about an event. This is called testifying. The judge looks at evidence to see if it lines up with what the witnesses say. He makes sure people stick with the facts/the truth. Based on what he hears and sees, he makes a judgement or decision about what took place and what will happen to the person or people who are involved.
- So how is Jesus a judge?
- Many followers of Jesus thought that salvation was only for the Jews. They were kind of trying to play judge by saying who Jesus did and did not come to save. We will read today how Peter came to understand that it wasn’t their place to be the Judge, but that job is for Jesus.
- Read or tell in your own words Acts 10:34-41.
- Read Acts 10:42-43.
- Did you hear some “courtroom words” in those verses? What were they?
- So who can be saved?
- God appointed Jesus as Judge and all who believe in Him receive forgiveness of their sins.
- We have seen that Jesus is the Judge because He knows all who believe in Him and renders forgiveness to those who do.
- Read John 3:19.
- What do we know? What do find out from reading this verse?
- The Light (Jesus) came into the world, but people loved darkness rather than Light.
- Could that be said about you? You know how Jesus wants you to live, but do you sometimes want to do your own thing rather than doing what Jesus wants you to do?
- We all do that!
- Aren’t you glad we aren’t judged on what we do or the sin we commit? If we were judged that way, we would all be doomed. We are judged by whether or not we believe in what Jesus has done for us. (Romans 7:24-25a, Romans 8:1, John 3:16-18)
- Read John 5:24-27, 30.
- Only Jesus can give a verdict of “not guilty” to those who believe in Him. When we believe in Him, we are no longer judged/condemned to death/separation from God but are free and given new life/eternal life only because of what Jesus did for us by dying for our sins and rising from the dead.
- Fun Activity
- Have your kids take turns being “Judge”. Have them determine whether what they hear is fact or opinion. They can use people’s “testimonies” and evidence they have seen for themselves to determine their answers. Here are some easy fact and opinion questions: Fact and Opinion.
- Ask, “How is Jesus our Judge?”
Day 2-King of kings and Lord of lords
- Pray.
- Practice the memory verse.
- Write it down (or trace it), illustrate or decorate it, and date it. Keep it with your Christmas keepsakes so that you will be able to look back at the verse and remember when you learned it.
- Read Revelation 17:14.
- Who have we learned is the Lamb? (Jesus-John 1:29)
- What did we read will happen? (kings will wage war against the Lamb-read verses 12-13 for a bit more context)
- Will the Lamb be defeated? No! He will overcome them.
- Why will He be able to defeat those who rise up against Him? Because He is the Lord of lords and the King of kings.
- What does the Kings of kings and the Lord of lords mean?
- Look at the capitalization. Jesus is THE King-capital K. He is in charge of all the other kings that ever were and ever will be. He is THE Lord-capital L. He in the Boss, the One who has all authority. He is the One who is the Master of all, even the most powerful people.
- Read Revelation 19:11, 13, and 16.
- Who are these verses describing?
- These verses describe Jesus coming for the final judgement of the earth.
- Can you picture what theses verses are saying? How does Jesus look? Powerful? Strong? Fair? Holy? Good? Mighty? Righteous?
- Jesus is all of these things. He rules all the rulers of the earth.
- Who are these verses describing?
- Read Psalm 136:3.
- What else do we know about Jesus? His lovingkindness is everlasting.
- Activity
- Have your younger kids make a crown to wear today to remember that Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords.
- Songs
- “King of Kings” by Hillsong Worship
- “King of Kings and Lord of Lords” (fun kid song) KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS – YouTube
Day 3-Hope
- Pray.
- Say the memory verse. My kids love for me to take videos of them so they can watch themselves later.
- What is hope? What are things you hope for?
- When we hear the word ‘hope’ in the New Testament, it refers to something that is certain, but hasn’t been realized yet. It speaks of something that hasn’t happened yet, but one can look forward to the day when it will happen.
- The Bible refers to Jesus as our Hope. ( 1 Timothy 1:1)
- How can we have hope in Jesus? What hope do we have in Him?
- Read 1 Peter 1:3-5.
- Wow! That was a lot of really big words. Let’s break it down a little bit.
- Verse 3 (read it again)
- We have hope because of Jesus’ resurrection.
- Verse 4 (read it again)
- We have hope because of Jesus’ resurrection that we (believers) will receive our inheritance one day.
- What’s an inheritance?
- Basically, an inheritance is what you get from a person after their death. Here in the U.S., it’s usually things like money or a car or house.
- So Jesus died, but because He didn’t stay dead but rose again, our inheritance (what we receive after His death) is “imperishable (it won’t pass away) and undefiled (flawless, pure) and will not fade away (everlasting and will not decay) and is reserved (kept safe) in heaven for us.” The inheritance we have coming isn’t like earthly ones.
- The inheritance we hope for is heaven where there will be joy, peace, God’s presence, perfection, and Jesus.
- Verse 5 (read it again)
- We have this hope the hope of heaven because of Jesus, and through faith God holds us tight and keeps our (believers) eternity, our inheritance secure.
- Verse 3 (read it again)
- Read Romans 15:13.
- God is the giver of our hope; He gave us Jesus. He wants to fill us up with joy and peace as we believe in Him so that we will be full of hope through His Holy Spirit.
- Fun Activity
- You might hate me for this, but kids love it: give your kids a “HOPE” tatoo.
- Write “HOPE” on their hand or arm in permanent marker. It will eventually come off, don’t worry!
- Have them explain to you how Jesus is our hope.
- Parents, Romans 15:13 and 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 are great verses to pray over your children.
Day 4-Peace
- Pray.
- Read Ephesians 2:13-14a
- What does this verse say about Jesus?
- What does this verse say about us?
- How were we far off?
- When we sin, and we all have (Romans 3:23), we are separated from God. (Isaiah 59:2)
- How are we brought near to God and have peace with Him?
- Read Romans 5:1.
- Read Colossians 1:20.
- We are brought near to God and can have peace and a close, intimate relationship with Him only because of Jesus. His death on the cross made a way for us to be reconciled (reunited/made right) with God.
- Read Jesus’ words in John 14:27.
- We have peace and the hope we talked about yesterday because of Jesus. He came to bring us peace with God, peace with others (Colossians 3:15), and peace in our hearts. (Philippians 4:7)
Day 5-Lord of All
- Pray.
- We have learned so much about Jesus this month.
- What name(s) of Jesus stands out to you the most? Why?
- Which name of Jesus is your favorite?
- What did you learn this month?
- What will you tell others about?
- To finish our study, we are going to go back to where we started.
- Read Philippians 2:3-11.
- Jesus is LORD of all.
- He is the boss.
- He is the master.
- He has the authority.
- How can we show Jesus that we love Him and honor Him as Lord?
- Even though Jesus is Lord, He also came to serve. (verses 7-8)
- How should we follow His example? Look back at verses 3-5 to help you.
- Jesus is LORD of all.
- Pray. Have each of your children pick a name of Jesus that they want to thank Him for. Thank Him for being Lord of all.
