All About Jesus-Week 3

Memory Verse

“For a child will born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 (CSB)

Day 1-The Good Shepherd

  • Pray.
  • Practice the memory verse.
  • Read John 10:11-15.
  • Talk about it.
    • What does Jesus call Himself?
    • What does a good shepherd do? (verse 11) What does that mean?
    • What happens to the flock when someone else is in charge and a wolf comes?
    • Why does Jesus say that He is the Good Shepherd? In what ways is like a shepherd?
    • Since Jesus is the Good Shepherd, who are we? (His sheep)
    • What was Jesus willing to do for us? (verse 15)
    • How do we, as sheep, need to respond to our Shepherd?
  • Read Psalm 23.
    • How does this psalm make you feel? Why?
    • What part of Psalm 23 stands out to you the most?
    • How will you follow the Good Shepherd today?

Day 2-The Lamb of God

  • Pray.
  • Practice the memory verse.
  • Before we learn the new name of Jesus, can you tell me who John the Baptist was? He was the one whom God had chosen to get the people ready for Jesus’ coming. Read John 1:6-8. He told people about the Savior who was coming soon, and encouraged them to repent of their sins and obey God.
  • Read John 1:29. This is what John calls Jesus on the day he baptized Jesus.
    • What name does John call Jesus?
    • What does He say Jesus came to do?
  • This is not the first time we hear Jesus being called the Lamb of God. In Isaiah 53:7, we see Jesus being referred to as a lamb, and many times throughout Revelation, Jesus is called the Lamb. (Revelation 5:12)
  • So, why is Jesus called the Lamb? What are some stories in the Bible you can think of that deal with lambs? What would they do with lambs?
  • Let’s look back in Exodus to to see the big connection between Jesus and a lamb.
  • Read or talk about the Passover Lamb in Exodus 12:1-13, 23-36.
    • God told the people to get a lamb that was unblemished, without any flaws, and use it as a sacrifice. They were to put the blood from the lamb on the outside door frame of their house. When the tenth plague occurred, which was the death of the firstborn, if the people had the lamb’s blood on their door, the Lord would pass over their house and death would not come to them. This would lead to the Israelites being freed from their slavery to the Egyptians.
  • So, how was Jesus like the lamb?
    • Jesus was perfect, without blemish or flaw.
    • He died for us. He had never sinned, so He did not deserve death.
    • He was a sacrifice-He took our place in death that we all deserve because we have sinned.
    • Just like the Israelites could not save themselves from the Egyptians, we cannot save ourselves from the punishment of our sin. We need a rescuer from the hold sin has on us just like the Israelites needed someone to rescue them from the hold the Egyptians had on them.
    • Those who trust that Jesus’ death, His blood, can take away their sins are saved! We can be rescued!
  • Isn’t it cool when we see things that happened in the Old Testament connect with Jesus?! God had a plan from the beginning to bring Jesus, the One we are celebrating this month, to be “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”.
  • Songs
    • “Revelation Song” by Phillips, Craig & Dean or Kari Jobe
    • “Worthy is the Lamb” by Hillsong
    • “Lamb of God” by Twila Paris

Day 3-Savior

  • Pray.
  • Practice the memory verse.
    • Go around the table and point to one of of your children. While you are pointing at them, they are to say the verse, but when you point to someone else, the first person should stop and the next person pick up where he/she left off. Continue this until the verse is finished.
  • Do you know what your name means? Your name means ______________________.
  • Read Matthew 1:21 to see what Jesus’ name means.
    • Why were Joseph and Mary to call the baby Jesus?
    • The name Jesus means “Savior”.
  • Read Luke 2:1-14.
    • What good news did the angel have?
    • The Savior, Christ the Lord, was Jesus!
      • Just FYI-Christ means “Messiah” or “Anointed One” and Lord can mean “master” but is also used to translate the covenant name of God. (NASB MacArthur Study Bible)
    • Why was this such great news? Why do we need a Savior? (John 3:16-17)
  • Pray. Thank God for Jesus, our Savior.

Day 4-Redeemer

  • Pray.
  • Practice the memory verse.
  • Imagine you were playing baseball in your backyard. You hit the ball so hard that it went over the fence, but it flew into a really expensive, brand new car and damaged it. How would you make that right? Would you have enough money to pay for it? What if it was impossible for you to pay it back?
  • That’s how sin is in our lives. We’ve all sinned (Romans 3:23), and the wages, the payment, for sin is death (Romans 6:23). There is no way for us to pay for it or do anything on our own to make it right. No matter how hard we try to be good, or fix our mistakes, we still mess up and are separated from God.
  • But there is good news! Jesus is our Redeemer. (Job 19:25, Romans 3:24, Galatians 3:13)
  • Do you know what a redeemer is?
  • Explain that to redeem means to buy back, to get back, to free what what harms you, or to change for the better (Merriam-Webster). So a redeemer is one who does all those things.
  • Knowing what a Redeemer is, how does Jesus fit that name?
    • Read Ephesians 1:7.
    • Read 1 Peter 1:18-19.
    • How did Jesus redeem us?
      • He paid the price, the ransom to God, for our sin, which was death.
      • His death and resurrection was how He made the way to get us back.
      • When He died for our sins and rose again, we are freed from what harms us-our sin.
      • He changed things for the better by redeeming us. Now we aren’t stuck in our sin forever, we have forgiveness and new life, eternal life with God when we acknowledge that Jesus is the only way all this happens and we surrender our lives to Him.

Day 5-The Resurrection and the Life

  • Pray.
  • Practice the memory verse.
  • Read John 11:25.
    • Who does Jesus say He is?
    • What He mean?
  • Read John 11:1-6, 11-44.
    • What evidence do we see in this story that Jesus is the Son of God? What did Jesus do that only God can do?
    • Only Jesus can give life.
    • Jesus told the people that He was raising Lazarus so that they may believe (verse 15) and so that the Son of God may glorified (verse 4). This miracle would help people understand more about Jesus and that was truly the Son of God.
    • Who else was raised from the dead? JESUS!
  • Let’s look at what Jesus’ resurrection means for us.
  • Read 1 Peter 1:3.
    • We have a living _______ (hope) that is secured by Jesus’ resurrection.
  • Read 1 Corinthians 15:17.
    • Jesus’ resurrection gave us forgiveness and atonement for our sins. Without His resurrection, this would not be possible. (Romans 4:25)
  • Read John 14:19, pay close attention to the last part of the verse.
    • Because of Jesus’ resurrection, believers have eternal life with God.
  • Like we said, Jesus’ resurrection gives you a living hope-hope right now and for eternity. How does the news of Jesus’ resurrection give you hope for today?
  • If your children are already believers, have them read Colossian 3:1-3.
    • Since you have been given new life in Christ, what are you to do?
    • How will you set your mind on things above and not on earthly things?
